The Pokémon Company continues to gear up for the next phase of the Pokémon TCG, and this time it’s doing so with three starter decks packed with adorable Pokémon. The new MEGA Starter Set (Formerly Decks) They have already been officially announced in Japan and will star Eevee ex, Meowscarada ex y Zoroark (ex). We already know that these decks will be released on July 31 in Japan, priced at 1,800 yen each.
New cards featuring Eevee, Sprigatito, and Zorua
Each deck will be based on a different evolutionary path: Eevee and Eevee ex, Sprigatito and Meowscarada (ex), and Zorua and Zoroark (ex). In addition to having new decks ready to play, we'll also have new cards exclusive to each Pokémon. In fact, it looks like each deck should include between seven and nine new letters, which would result in a total of approximately 20 to 30 unique cards among the three products.
Eevee ex Mega Starter Set
The deck of Eevee ex It seems designed for those looking for a simple, straightforward experience. Eevee ex is a Colorless Basic Pokémon with 200 PS, an attack that steals three cards and another that can 200 damage points, although there is a small risk of dealing 30 points of damage to yourself if the coin flip results in heads. It doesn't seem like a particularly complex card, but it is a very player-friendly option for those who want to get started without overcomplicating things.
That same deck also includes Pawmot, a card that stands out for its ability. Once per turn, it lets you attach a Basic Lightning Energy from the discard pile to one of your Pokémon. This kind of Energy acceleration is always worth a second look, though it remains to be seen whether the format will give it real room to shine or if it will remain an interesting tool within a more casual product.
Meowscarada Mega Starter Set (ex)
On the other hand, the deck of Meowscarada ex opts for a more tactical style. Meowscarada (ex), a Grass-type with 320 PS, you can 120 damage points the Active Pokémon and others as well 120 points a Pokémon on your opponent's Bench that already has damage counters. This makes it a card with the potential to apply pressure to various areas of the field, especially when combined with effects that deal damage beforehand.
It has also been shown that Arboliva, which grants an interesting ability: once per turn, it allows you to swap your opponent’s Active Pokémon for one from their Bench, although it’s the opponent who chooses which Pokémon enters the game. It’s not as powerful as choosing the target yourself, but it can create awkward situations and force defensive decisions. Plus, its attack deals 100 damage and heals 30 HP, which fits well with a more methodical strategy.
Zoroark ex Mega Starter Set
The third and final deck features Zoroark (ex), a Dark-type card with 270 PS. Its first attack deals 20 damage for each Pokémon you have in play, so it can reach some decent numbers if you fill up the Bench quickly. Its second attack deals 210 points, although with the limitation that it cannot be used again during the next turn. This is a move that’s very characteristic of Zoroark: fast, aggressive, and dependent on maintaining a strong presence on the field.
Along with Zoroark EX, the following has also been revealed Liepard, which can deal damage to your opponent's Active Pokémon based on the number of damage counters it has. It's a card that, at least on paper, could work well with strategies focused on dealing damage gradually before delivering the finishing blow. It's unclear whether it will have a competitive impact, but it does seem like a fun card to experiment with.
Beyond the gameplay, one of the biggest draws of these decks is the new Rare Illustrations. They're beautiful. The community has already reacted quite enthusiastically to the artwork, especially the cards featuring Sprigatito, Eevee, Zorua, and Arboliva.
